Introduction to audio description

Audio description is a spoken running commentary inserted between the dialogue in a film or television programme to provide a verbal description of objects, actions, body language and other important visual information. Blind television viewers often miss a lot of the content and meaning of programmes such as dramas, comedies, films and documentaries because information that is vital to a full understanding of the programme is often conveyed solely through visual means. With audio description, this information is revealed to blind viewers and programmes really come alive.

New audio description standard will make access easier

Differences and limitations in the way audio description (AD) is broadcast have, until now, made it difficult for digital television receivers to provide a user-friendly way for viewers to access it. Digital Video Broadcasting, the international industry consortium, has devised a new standard that will overcome these difficulties.

Argos £15 digibox proves low cost of audio description

A Freeview receiver sold by Argos in the UK for under £15 features audio description. This shows that cost can no longer be considered a barrier to the inclusion of audio description functionality in all DTT receivers.

UK audio description exceeds quotas for Q1 & Q2 2008

Ofcom's quarterly report on the provision of access services (subtitling, audio description and signing) reveals that almost all UK broadcasters are exceeding their quotas.
